NAPALM DEATH Frontman Says TRUMP Is 'Ludicrous In Every Way,' Backs CLINTON For President
November 3, 2016NAPALM DEATH singer Mark "Barney" Greenway has weighed in on the 2016 presidential election, saying that controversial Republican candidate Donald Trump is "so ludicrous in every way" that he "just can't take him seriously."
The frontman, who has long been outspoken on politics, religion and social issues, told Metal Wani in a new interview (hear audio below): "I have to say that I really liked what [former presidential hopeful] Bernie Sanders was, and is, about; I really did. There were so many things that he spoke about that really rang true with me and were the things that I always supported in the system over here [in the U.K.] as well."
He continued: "I really struggle when it comes to the kind of situation that you've got now with the U.S. election. I mean, Trump is just… I just can't take him seriously. I know he's really offended a lot of people, but I think he's so ludicrous in every way. And I just can't believe that people would swallow that.
"Politicians always make this point of not insulting the electorate and they really make a big issue of that. But it doesn't matter who you are. If you are really gullible enough to swallow some of the stuff that Trump says, given the position that he's gonna be potentially presented with a couple of months on, I just don't understand it. From a basic human perspective, it just doesn't make any sense.
"So, yeah, it's not gonna be good for anybody, I think, if he gets [elected president]. Because we have an interest in it too, because, like it or not, whatever happens in America has a domino effect elsewhere, so we all should be concerned about it."
As for the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, Greenway said: "Given the toss-up between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, obviously I've already said who I would really pitch for. But I think at this point, it's a case of damage limitation for all of us, and I think it would be far preferable for everybody if she gets it. 'Cause she's gonna get it. The system's not gonna collapse overnight. We have the system that we have, everywhere in the world, that is kind of a derivative of some kind of core system. And as much as, with my nonpolitical head on, or rather with my anti-mainstream-politics head on, I'd like to see the pillars come tumbling down, which would give everybody in the world a better chance at freedom and dignity and equality and stuff, it ain't gonna happen. So I think the best thing for now is if Hillary Clinton was to win. I think that's fairly obvious. So there you go."
Greenway's new comments echo what he told Decibel magazine earlier in the year, when he said: "[Trump is] an oaf! What he's said has offended a lot of people, but I can't even be offended because he's so ridiculous. Even if he got elected, he couldn't do half the stuff he wants because it's against international law. Okay, he has his 'Latinos for Trump' and 'African-Americans for Trump' crowds, but do you honestly think that's a good barometer for those people in the population? I fucking think not."
He continued: "We laugh at people like Trump, but we have similar characters. Every system does. We've got the U.K. Independence Party, who are worryingly popular, but only because of the brainwashing that goes on in the media. We get it in the U.K. as much as you do [in the U.S.]. But Trump is above and beyond. He's got form in the U.K., too, because he tried to build that golf course, but in the end he got told to fuck right off. But it still destroyed a piece of coastline in the process. It's that whole thing: if you're a citizen and you commit a crime, you'll get punished. If you're a corporation or a billionaire, you can almost get away with murder."
NAPALM DEATH released its 15th studio album, "Apex Predator - Easy Meat", in January 2015 via Century Media Records.
